Sebaceous Hyperplasia Colchester & Chelmsford. This is a common benign condition of the sebaceous glands presenting as one or multiple creamy or yellowish papules with a pit-like depression that looks a little like a doughnut shape. These are generally caused by genetics.
Sebaceous Hyperplasia is a disorder of the sebaceous glands that can be single blemishes or multiple and is mainly found on the face, particularly the forehead, cheeks, and nose. The surface of a hyperplasia tends to be smooth and shiny, and tiny little blood vessels can be seen running through them.
Sebaceous Hyperplasia is often found in clients over the age of 40, although we shouldn’t rule them out on younger skin.
When I place Sebaceous Hyperplasia under the magnifying lamp they appear as little lobules surrounding an indentation, hence why they take on the appearance of a doughnut.
When Sebaceous Hyperplasia are newly formed, they may swell after perspiration, although as the blemish gets older, it should become less obvious. From experience, this isn’t always the case. Although they are asymptomatic, they can become red, irritated, and painful if they are scratched or otherwise disturbed.
Sometimes these blemishes can be mistaken for Basal Cell Carcinoma, however, if there was any doubt when assessing your blemishes, I would ask you to get them checked by the GP prior to treatment commencing.
I find also that many of my clients who present with Sebaceous Hyperplasia have oily skin and are maybe overexfoliating or not moisturising, so I do discuss skincare at this point as well, as although we can tackle the blemishes and reduce their appearance or completely remove them, we want to establish the root cause if we can, and often skincare can be behind a multitude of unwanted blemishes.
Diathermy for me is the best method of treating these blemishes, and depending on how many and how large the blemishes are, multiple sessions may be required.
