Time to get rid of those pesky pigmentation spots!
Client profile
I met a client the other day who throughout her 20’s spent most of her time partying in Ibiza, having the most wonderful time but ignoring the dangers of the sun and the effect it can have. Since hitting her early 40’s she has started to notice dark brown spots on both cheeks known as pigmenation spots. Even with cover up these were still visible and she was starting to become self consious.
You may also hear these referred to as sun spots, liver spots or solar lentigo, harmless as they be are almost always unwanted.
The NHS no longer removes benign blemishes such as these so this is when my client started to research what could she do. Having tried many facials and homecare to lighten these, although her complexion improved the dark spots were still apparent.
What happened next?
I ran through a detailed consultation with my client, medical history, lifestyle, treatment options etc and we discussed the best way in which to proceed. We discussed both treatment options, being diathermy or cryopen, both of which successfully treat dark spots/pigmentation spots. I explained the differences between the treatments and the fact that cryopen uses liquid nitrous oxide and is a way of freezing the blemish to cause distruction of the pigmented area and as the new skin forms it does so without the pigment. Diathermy on the other hand uses an electrical current to lift the top layer of pigmented skin so new skin again can form.
Treatment can vary in time but generally takes 5-15 minutes. Following either method of treatment on pigmentation spots, a slight tingling, stinging and warmth in the area may be felt. This is completely normal. Aftercare is to be strictly followed to achieve the very best results.
We decided to use diathermy on this occasion and I saw my client 14 days post treatment. The dark spots were well on their way to being healed showcasing the dissapearance of the pigment and the formation of new skin beneath.
There is no longer a need to live with pigmentation spots, with the use of disthermy or cyropen they are easily banished. Once the area is healed I will always advise to wear an minimum of SPF30 all year round.
