Milia Removal Colchester & Chelmsford. Mila is a blemish often mistaken for whiteheads as they are tiny, although sometimes they can be larger, white blemishes occurring mainly on the face. Milia, given that they lie very close to the surface under the skin, are very receptive to diathermy, and this is my chosen method to remove them.

Diathermy causes minimal disruption to the skin and can be instant, although it can also take a few days to disperse.

A milium cysts is a small benign plug or cyst often found in groups and therefore referred to by the plural milia. They present as pearly white, rounded and sometimes hard keratinized lumps. They are white cysts that contain keratin that has simply become trapped beneath the epidermis – the top layer of skin. They arise from an undeveloped sebaceous gland or sweat gland and first formed in the dermis where the glands are found and then rise to the top which is when we see them.

Milia are most commonly associated with dry skin, although they can also be found on oily skin, so I believe anyone of any age and skin type can get Milia.

Primary Milia as they are called, develop in childhood, adolescence, and adults of both sexes and can be seen in multiple eruptions around the eyes, forehead, and nose.

Secondary Milia can arise from a site of injury, damaged sweat ducts, blistering of epidermal tissue, or an adverse reaction to topical medication such as steroids.

Newly formed milia can be soft to touch, the longer the milia has been present, the harder and more compressed the keratin becomes, and therefore it feels harder.

When treated with Diathermy, the milia can appear slightly whiter at first if they do not instantly disappear, and then over the course of the following week they will gradually disappear. Some Milia can be particularly stubborn, so a follow up treatment may sometimes be required and if there are multiple milia we may decide to do a number of sessions so as not to overwork the skin.
