Pigmentation Spots Colchester & Chelmsford. These spots are also known as age spots, solar lentigo, liver spots, brown spots and sun spots.

They are changes in the colour of the skin often associated with older skin, however, they can appear on skin as young as in their twenties due to sun damage. They are generally found on the face, chest and hands. The good thing is, they are harmless and can easily be treated using diathermy or cryotherapy.

These areas of hyperpigmentation are created by the overproduction of melanin. There are many types of melanin related hyperpigmentation but the majority of age spots are caused by the accumulation of a brown-yellow pigment called lipofuscin in the connective tissues of the body, due to the ageing of the collagen-producing cells.

If you are unsure as to whether you have an age spot then take a closer look and see if you have a flat round/oval pigmented (brown) patch of skin. They can range from light to dark brown and are surrounded by normal appearing skin and range from a pin size dot to around 13mm in size. Often pigmentation spots can cluster together although a single one on its own is also a normality.

The appearance of age spots is generally slow, however if you have a sudden appearance of any blemish you should always go and get it checked at the doctors. Pigmentation spots can be treated effectively by either using Diathermy or Cryotherapy, both heal slightly differently but the outcome is a much clearer looking skin. At consultation we would discuss what method is best for you and the blemish itself.

Once the healing has taken place the skin will appear slightly pinker at first as this is fresh new skin and needs time to pigment itself. I always advise my clients that you may always have a footprint of where the pigment has been but most are happy to just remove the darker patches and enjoy a much clearer and youthful appearance.
