Rosacea is not a disease but a progressive vascular disorder occurring in men and women. It can often appear in the thirties and is characterised by facial erythema (redness) with inflamed papules and pustules (although not always).
When Rosacea is present the skin can appear tenses and shiny and on closer inspection often reveals telangiectasia (thread veins). This is where thread vein removal using diathermy can help with the appearance of Rosacea, however it must be very carefully worked on.
Rosacea is normally found on the face although it can also spread to bald scalps and on rare occasions to the upper arms.
Rosacea is normally aggravated by outside temperature changes especially in the winter as you move between hot and cold environments or use the heating in the car for instance as well as exposure to the sun, active sports that cause the blood to flow more so and, saunas and steam rooms, alcohol and hot and spicy foods. Equally it can be triggered through any emotional upset.
The use of products that may not be suitable can also worsen the appearance of this condition.
How to best manage Rosacea:
While there’s no cure for rosacea, various treatments and lifestyle changes can help manage the condition.
- Medical Treatments: Dermatologists may prescribe topical or oral medications to reduce inflammation and redness.
- Laser and Light Therapy: These treatments can reduce redness and the appearance of blood vessels.
- Skincare Routine: Gentle skincare is crucial. Use mild, non-irritating cleansers and moisturizers. Sunscreen is vital to protect sensitive skin from UV rays.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Identifying and avoiding triggers can significantly help. Keeping a symptom diary to track flare-ups can aid in recognising patterns and triggers.
- Dietary Adjustments: Reducing the intake of spicy foods, hot beverages, and alcohol can decrease the frequency and severity of flare-ups.
