Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Sebaceous Hyperplasia Colchester & Chelmsford

Sebaceous Hyperplasia is a common condition I see in both of my Colchester and Chelmsford Clinics although unless you have it, not many people would know what it is and even if you do have it, you may not have yet discovered what it is.

Over the years I have met clients with a singular hyperplasia on their forehead for instance and then clients whose faces are fairly well covered. Each case is different.

Here my client presents with multiple Sebaceous Hyperplasia on the forehead, some larger than others and throughout the time I have been seeing her her skin has improved dramatically. Along with her treatments with myself, I have also recommended certain skin care to use to help balance the skin and potentially help stop the appearance of further blemishes .

This is a common skin condition which is showcased by the enlargement of sebaceous glands. These glands are found throughout the skin and are responsible for producing sebum. Sebum is an oily substance that helps to lubricate the skin and hair. When sebum glands become enlarged, they can appear as small, whitish or yellowish bumps on the skin’s surface, mainly found on the face.

More often than not they have a central indentation and in the industry, we liken them to little doughnuts. They can vary in size, from tiny little dots to larger blemishes.

Sebaceous hyperplasia is believed to be influenced by factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, and sun exposure and I believe misuse of skin care products also as I have seen dramatic difference when my clients reassess what they are currently using.

Although these blemishes are harmless, my clients find them bothersome and for those who wear make-up, they can create an uneven appearance once highlighted with say a foundation.

So in summary diathermy which is an electrical current treatment for these blemishes is very effective, although it is important to note that new bumps can develop and this cannot eliminate that happening, only improve the appearance of those already appeared.
