The History of Diathermy

Diathermy Colchester & Chelmsford

The History of Diathermy:

Diathermy is a treatment involving the generation of heat within body tissues through electric currents. This method has been used for various medical treatments for decades.

The term “diathermy” is derived from the Greek words “dia,” meaning “through,” and “thermia,” meaning “heat.” The concept of using heat for therapeutic purposes is ancient, but diathermy as we know it began to take shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

  1. Early Beginnings:
    • Nikola Tesla’s Contributions: In the late 1800s, Nikola Tesla, a pioneer in electrical engineering, demonstrated that high-frequency currents could generate heat in biological tissues. His work laid the groundwork for future developments in diathermy.
    • D’Arsonval and Tesla Currents: Around the same time, French physician Jacques-Arsène d’Arsonval explored the physiological effects of high-frequency currents, which were later called d’Arsonval currents. These discoveries were crucial in understanding how electric currents could be safely used in medicine.
  2. First Clinical Uses:
    • Physician Introductions: By the early 20th century, physicians began experimenting with diathermy for treating various conditions. The first clinical applications involved treating infections, arthritis, and other inflammatory diseases.
    • Development of Equipment: The development of the first diathermy machines in the 1920s and 1930s allowed for more controlled and effective treatments. These machines used shortwave, microwave, and ultrasound frequencies to generate heat within body tissues.

Diathermy technology then continued to evolve throughout the 20th century, with significant advancements in equipment, techniques, and applications. Evolving into a sophisticated and versatile tool. From the pioneering work of Tesla and d’Arsonval to modern advancements in diathermy equipment and techniques, the ability to harness heat for healing and treatment of blemishes continues to have a profound impact on medical treatments.

When you have a consultation we will discuss the treatment in detail and how diathermy is used to treat your paticular blemish as every blemish and every person is different. Some blemishes require a higher current than others and methods change depending on type and size.
