What Are Fibrous Papules and How Can Diathermy Help?

Fibrous papules are small, firm, skin-coloured or slightly pink bumps that typically appear on the nose, though they can also develop elsewhere on the face. They are often mistaken for moles and vice versa. Fibrous papules are benign (non-cancerous) growths made up of fibrous tissue and blood vessels. They usually develop in early adulthood and tend to remain stable in size and appearance over time.

The exact cause of these blemishes isn’t fully known, but they are considered a form of harmless skin growth. They’re not caused by sun exposure, infection, or poor skincare, and unlike acne or blackheads, they don’t come and go. They’re simply one of those things that some of us just get.

While they don’t require treatment for medical reasons, many people choose to have them treated for cosmetic reasons, especially if the papule is on the tip of the nose or in another prominent area. I find many clients just don’t like the feel of them and when applying make up they can identify themselves even more so. That’s where diathermy comes in—a safe, effective method for removing skin lesions using heat.

Diathermy works by delivering a controlled electrical current to the area via a fine probe, which heats and destroys the targeted tissue without damaging the surrounding skin. The procedure is quick, usually requires minimal downtime, and leaves minimal notice of where it has been if any.

In most cases, only one treatment is needed, and the papule doesn’t return. With proper aftercare, healing is smooth and discreet.

If you’ve noticed a persistent bump on your nose that hasn’t changed but bothers you aesthetically, we start with a consultation to confirm what it is and then all being well, treatment can be carried out.
