What does Mole Reduction mean?
Mole reduction is what I offer as an advanced blemish removal practitioner. I use diathermy in order to reduce down the mole and it’s appearance on the skin. As with any treatment there are important considerations when you are looking to have treatment of a mole for cosmetic purposes.

Histology: What is the difference between cutting out a mole and using diathermy to reduce.
When a mole is cut out, the entire lesion (including a margin of surrounding tissue) can be sent to a laboratory for histological analysis. This is the gold standard for ruling out anything suspicious. Also of course if the mole is confirmed as being cancerous then full removal of the mole is required to ensure it doesn’t spread.

With diathermy, however, the mole tissue is destroyed during treatment and therefore cannot be examined under a microscope (generally this would only be done if there was cause for concern with it) I will only treat moles that have been confirmed as benign by a GP or Dermatology assessment.

How does diathermy work?
Diathermy uses a high-frequency electrical current to tap over the visible part of a mole, drying it our and therefore reducing it down . The treatment is quick, precise and has minimal recovery as it is all surface level with no incisions or stitches leaving the area to heal with little to no signs of treatment.

Things to consider
Although diathermy offers excellent cosmetic outcomes and in all my years practicing in this area I have never seen the return of a mole, it must be remembered that because only the visible surface is removed, there is a chance of recurrence if deeper cells remain.

As with all blemishes I treat, there is also a small risk of pigmentation changes or scarring.

Last thoughts.
Diathermy can be an excellent option for anyone wanting to improve the appearance of any benign, raised mole. As a practitioner for many years, I will always ensure you have had the necessary checks prior to any treatment and that you understand the rest of the mole still remians beneath the skin so you must always keep an eye out for any changes to the area and seek medical advice as you would for any mole should you notice anything.
