Mole Removal Colchester & Chelmsford. The majority of us have moles, and usually they are benign. Generally, it is best to leave moles alone, but if they are causing you distress, whether that be the appearance of them or the location, then it may be treated by using diathermy, which can reduce the appearance of most raised moles. If you decide you would like mole reduction, then I will ask you to visit the doctor to confirm the mole is benign, and then once back in my clinic, I will ask you to complete a form with the date and time you visited the doctor and to confirm yourself that the mole is benign. Once all this is done, we can go ahead with treatment.
Moles are one of the most popular blemishes I treat simply because clients find they affect their confidence and how they feel when exposed.
Moles can develop all throughout life, although the majority appear in childhood. Moles come in many shapes and sizes and anywhere on the body. They vary in size and colour and are a form of pigmented neavi. Moles can be black, brown, even slightly blue and can often have terminal hairs due to the vascular supply.
Congenital Moles
Appear at birth or during the first two years of life. They have well defined borders, an even colour and are usually symmetrical. Small congenital moles are common and are often relatively small.
Pigmented Moles
‘Normal Moles’ are known as pigmented moles. They vary in colour with different skin tones and can be found anywhere on the body. Most moles develop during childhood and early adulthood and are known as acquired melanocytic naevi. The number of moles increases up until the age of 30-40 at which point the rate of new ones developing will decrease.
Dysplastic Naevi (atypical moles)
These are larger melanocytic moles, often with flat and raised areas. These moles are often asymmetric, resulting in oval rather than round moles, which often have greater colour variations. These moles are generally found on areas of the body that have been exposed to UV radiation from the sun. I would always advise clients to monitor any changes with these moles and seek medical advice if there are any concerns at all.
