Mole Reduction in Colchester & Chelmsford

Most moles are completely harmless. But harmless does not always mean untroubling; a raised mole that catches on clothing, sits in an obvious place, or has simply been a source of self-consciousness for years is a very understandable reason to want something done about it. I’m Amy Gordon, and I specialise in advanced blemish removal and skin rejuvenation. I work from private clinics in Colchester and Chelmsford, and I regularly perform mole reduction. Before treating anything, I properly assess every mole, and I take that assessment extremely seriously.

What are moles?

Moles are pigmented growths that develop when melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigment, cluster together rather than spreading evenly through the skin. They can be flat or raised, smooth or slightly textured, and range in colour from light tan through to very dark brown. Most people have between ten and forty moles, and the majority are entirely benign. Moles can change gradually over time, particularly in response to sun exposure, hormonal changes and ageing. A mole that has been present and stable for many years is very different clinically from one that has appeared recently or begun to change, and this distinction matters enormously before any treatment takes place.

Clinical assessment before every treatment

With moles, the assessment that takes place before any treatment is the most important part of the process. I hold MASCED accreditation (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) meaning I am specifically trained to assess lesions and identify anything that warrants further investigation. Before any mole can be treated, it must have been checked by a GP and confirmed as benign. If that has not yet happened, or if you would prefer an additional layer of reassurance, I work in partnership with consultant dermatologist Dr Toby Nelson at Map My Mole. I will prepare a full report with clinical imagery and send it directly to them, and they will assess whether the mole is benign before any treatment takes place. If at any point during your assessment I have any reason for caution, whether that is something I have observed myself or a question that has arisen following a GP review, I will tell you. I will either ask you to have it checked again or, with your agreement, send a report through to dermatology via Map My Mole. Your safety always comes before any treatment outcome. If you are unsure whether what you have is a mole or something else, you do not need to work that out before your appointment. I will assess any pigmented lesion or growth and tell you exactly what we are looking at before anything is discussed further.

What your appointment involves

Your appointment begins with a detailed assessment of the mole, its size, shape, colour, borders and any changes you have noticed over time. I will ask how long it has been present and whether it has changed, and I will carefully examine the surrounding skin. Only once I am satisfied that the mole is stable and benign will treatment be considered. This includes having it checked by a GP or dermatologist. Where treatment is appropriate, mole reduction is carried out using advanced diathermy, a precise, controlled electrical current applied directly to the mole tissue. This technique allows me to reduce a mole’s raised profile and, in many cases, significantly reduce its appearance. Some moles respond fully in a single session. Others, particularly those that are larger or more raised, may benefit from more than one treatment. I will not promise a result I cannot deliver, but I will be honest with you about what is realistic before you commit to anything. Following treatment, I will walk you through your aftercare before you leave. Most clients return to their normal routine the same day. Your six- to eight-week follow-up appointment is included at no extra cost, so I can check the skin has healed well and answer any questions.

From first enquiry to my follow up consultation, Amy has been nothing but fantastic - Amy is thorough, informative & very knowledgeable and caring, and I couldn’t be happier with my treatment and end result. Her treatment room is welcoming, clean and comfortable, with plenty of free parking. 5 days post SK removal and the area on my face is exactly how I’d hoped for, smooth, how it used to be - so happy and wish I had found Amy sooner. Would 100% recommend Amy!

Amy assessed an annoying wart like lump on my arm and asked for an opinion from the dermatologist before continuing with treatment. She explained the whole process very clearly to make sure I understood . Amy is very professional and knowledgeable and puts you at ease with her lovely smile and warm manner. She has all the skills and equipment to treat most skin conditions. Once treatment is completed Amy will book a follow up to make sure the skin has healed and she is contactable by phone or email if any concerns. My wart has now disappeared since Amy treated it . If you have any skin concerns please ask for Amy’s opinion as she can advise and give you peace of mind Thankyou Amy 😍

Excellent treatment. I had a small millia removed from underneath my eyelid that was really bothering me. Amy was reassuring and clearly explained everything. The treatment was painless and within just a few days it had cleared and was almost invisible. Follow up appointment was a nice reassurance to check her work. Now there's not even a mark left. Perfect service.

I had a seborrheic keratosis (SK) on my head that I’d been meaning to have removed for a while, and I’m so glad I finally chose Amy Gordon Advanced Cosmetics. From start to finish, the entire experience was thoroughly positive. Amy is incredibly friendly, professional, and reassuring. At my consultation, she took the time to clearly explain the procedure, what to expect, and how the issue would be treated. I felt completely informed and at ease before going ahead. The treatment itself was quick, straightforward, far easier than I had imagined. The clinic was spotless, clean, and sterile, which gave me even more confidence in the process. Aftercare was exactly as Amy described, and everything healed perfectly. I also had a follow-up appointment for a final check, which showed how attentive and thorough she is with her clients. The keratosis on my head is completely gone now, and I honestly wish I had it done months ago. I cannot recommend Amy enough—an excellent service and a fantastic result! I have even made another appointment to have the one removed from the back of my ear. Once again thank you.

Mole Reduction FAQs

Can all moles be treated?

No. Before any treatment takes place, every mole must have been confirmed as benign by a GP or dermatologist. Only moles that are assessed as stable and benign are suitable for reduction using diathermy. This is non-negotiable and extremely important.

What is the difference between mole reduction and mole removal?

Diathermy reduces the appearance of a mole, in many cases very significantly, by treating the tissue with a precise electrical current. For raised moles in particular, this can result in a much flatter, less noticeable appearance. I will explain exactly what is realistic for yours at your assessment.

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as a brief warmth or mild stinging during treatment. It is generally very well tolerated. I will talk you through what to expect before anything takes place.

How many sessions will I need?

Some moles respond well in a single session. Others, particularly larger or more raised moles, may need further treatment. I will give you a clear, honest indication at your assessment.

Will I be left with a scar?

Diathermy is a precise technique, and the risk of scarring is low. We will discuss the likely outcome for your skin at your appointment, and I will always give you a realistic expectation rather than an optimistic one.

I have a mole that has been changing. Should I come in?

If you have noticed any changes to a mole, in size, shape, colour, or texture, you should have it assessed promptly. I carry out thorough assessments and send reports to Dr Toby Nelson and his team at Map My Mole. Please do not wait.

Can moles be treated on the face?

Yes. I treat many moles on the face. Diathermy’s precision makes it well suited to areas that require particular care.

How soon can I be seen?

In most cases assessment and, where appropriate, treatment take place in the same appointment for a singular mole. To find the next available date at my Colchester or Chelmsford clinic, book online or contact me directly.

Are there any contraindications to treatment?

Yes. There are contraindications to diathermy, including pregnancy, certain medical conditions and active skin infections in the treatment area. Your full medical history will be discussed at your consultation, and you will be advised of anything that affects your suitability for treatment.

If you would like to understand more about what mole reduction involves and what diathermy can realistically achieve, my blog post on what mole reduction means is a helpful read before your appointment.
