Warts are small viral growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They come in several forms, and the type affects where they appear and how they are best treated.
Common warts are firm, raised growths with a rough, uneven surface, sometimes described as resembling a small cauliflower. They often display tiny black dots from clotted blood vessels and most frequently appear on the hands and fingers.
Plane warts are small, flat or very slightly raised blemishes, flesh-coloured or lightly pigmented. They can appear in clusters and are more common in children, often found on the face or hands.
Filiform warts are long and slender with a distinctive prong-like appearance. They most commonly appear around the eyes, mouth and neck, and require particular care and precision during treatment due to their location.
If you are not sure which type of wart you have, that is not something you need to work out before coming in. Amy will assess the growth at your appointment and identify exactly what is present.
Before any removal takes place, every growth is assessed thoroughly. A number of skin lesions can look similar to a wart at first glance, and some warrant a very different clinical response. Molluscum contagiosum, seborrhoeic keratoses and other lesions can appear almost identical, and it is important to establish exactly what is present before any treatment takes place.
Amy holds MASCED accreditation, Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection, meaning she is specifically trained to assess skin lesions and identify anything that requires further investigation before any treatment is carried out. Where a growth raises any clinical concern, Amy works alongside consultant dermatologist Dr Toby Nelson to ensure the appropriate pathway is followed. Nothing is removed without a proper assessment first.
Your appointment begins with a detailed visual assessment of the growth, examining its shape, surface texture, colour and the surrounding skin. Where the assessment indicates the growth is suitable for treatment, removal can usually take place in the same visit if it is a single blemish.
Wart removal is performed using advanced diathermy, a precise electrical current applied directly to the wart tissue. Some warts, particularly those that are long-standing or deeply rooted, may require more than one session to resolve fully. Amy will give you a clear indication of what to expect at your assessment.
Following treatment, full aftercare guidance is provided at your appointment. Most clients return to their normal routine the same day.
A follow-up appointment at six to eight weeks is included as standard, at no additional cost, to review healing and address any questions.

Is wart removal permanent?
Treatment successfully removes the visible wart. Warts are caused by a virus, so no treatment eliminates the virus itself; the aim is to kick-start the body’s immune response to kill it.
Does the treatment hurt?
Most clients describe diathermy as a mild warmth or sting during treatment. It is quick and generally very well tolerated. Amy will talk you through what to expect before anything takes place.
How many sessions will I need?
Some warts resolve in a single session; others may need more than one treatment, particularly if they have been present for some time. You will be able to discuss this at your assessment.
Will treatment leave a scar?
Diathermy is a precise technique with a low risk of scarring. The likely outcome for your skin will be discussed at your appointment.
What if I’m not sure what the growth is?
You do not need to know what you are looking at before you come in. The assessment at the start of your appointment is specifically for this purpose. If the growth requires further investigation before any treatment, you will be referred through the practice’s dermatology connection rather than treated or asked to see your GP. Can warts be treated on the face or near the eye?
Yes. Amy regularly treats warts and other blemishes in sensitive areas including the face, eyelids and neck. The precision of diathermy makes it well suited to delicate sites.
Should I try home treatments first?
Home treatments carry a number of risks, including damage to surrounding skin and the possibility of treating the wrong type of lesion entirely. Professional assessment means you know exactly what you are dealing with before any treatment takes place.
How soon can I be seen?

Are there any contraindications to treatment?
