Understanding Diathermy Treatment for Xanthelasma

Xanthelasma are benign, cholesterol-filled deposits that appear as yellowish bumps on the skin, typically around the eyelids. While they are not harmful, many people seek treatment for cosmetic reasons, hoping to reduce their appearance. Diathermy, a method that I use in my clinics uses high-frequency electrical currents to target and shrink tissue, I find this to be extremely effective and a fairly quick form of treatment.

However the effectiveness of diathermy for xanthelasma’s can vary depending on factors such as the size, location, and depth of the deposits. Diathermy works by applying controlled heat to the affected area, which breaks down the fatty deposits. The treatment often leads to a reduction in the size of the xanthelasma and diminishes their yellow appearance, giving the skin a more even tone although it is not always the case that th xanthelasma will go completely.

It’s important I manage your expectations when you are considering this treatment as diathermy is not a guaranteed method for completely removing this blemish. On saying that in many cases, the goal is to reduce their visibility and improve the overall appearance of the skin. While some xanthelasma’s may shrink considerably after a single session, others may require multiple treatments to see noticeable improvements. Moreover, results may not be permanent, and xanthelmas can reappear over time, particularly if the underlying cause (such as high cholesterol levels) is not addressed. In consultation I will always ask you to visit your doctor if you haven’t already to ensure you address any underlying health issues causing them.

Immediately post treatment you will experience temporary redness, sometimes a little swelling and as you heal over the first 3-5 days a little scabbing in the treated area. Over the next two weeks this then slowly sloughs away and at 6 weeks I would review the results and we will either continue with treatment or decide you are happy with the current look.
