Xanthelasma along with skin tags is one of the most common blemishes I see, although if I were to say Xanthelasma to someone, they are more than likely not to recognise the name.
Xanthelasma is a yellowish cholesterol deposit under the skin, usually seen on or around the eyelids. It is often associated with high cholesterol, although many of my clients have been tested after seeing me and have had a perfectly normal cholesterol reading.
Xanthelasma can be indicative of lipid metabolism disorders (e.g hyperlipidaemia) which can be associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease or pancreatitis, again making it crucial that a trip to the doctor be made to ensure nothing is going on behind the scenes.
This blemish can really affect the confidence of many clients I see, with some cases being much worse than others, and the quicker you can treat, the better and quicker we can get results.
When I am treating Xanthelasma, first and foremost, I am looking for a reduction in the colour of the blemish and then hope to see a reduction in the raised part of the blemish. I am careful to call this a reduction as not every case sees a complete transformation back to how the skin originally was.
I tend to treat my Xanthelasma clients with anything between 3-6 sessions to get to where we want to be with the results. It can be a stubborn blemish, so my clients are always aware that it’s a journey we’re going on.
Xanthelasma is not a painful blemish, although it can become uncomfortable in the eye area as it can become a shadow, even that you can see out of the corner or your eye as such. They very much vary in shape, size, and size and colour and tend to start off as a small lump.
