If you’ve ever noticed what looks like a stubborn, oversized blackhead sitting most likely on your back or face, that just won’t budge no matter how much you squeeze it, chances are it’s not a blackhead at all. It’s most likely something called a Pore of Winer, and it’s far more common than most people realise.
A Pore of Winer is a dilated pore that becomes blocked with keratin, which is essentially a build-up of dead skin cells. Over time, this plug becomes quite dark in colour as it oxidises, which is exactly why so many people mistake it for a blackhead. The key difference is that a Pore of Winer tends to sit alone rather than in clusters, and it usually has a noticeably wider opening to the skin. They can appear anywhere but are most commonly found on the back, neck, and face.
Trying to squeeze or extract one yourself is rarely a good idea. Without the right technique, you risk pushing the contents deeper, causing trauma to the surrounding tissue, and potentially ending up with scarring or infection. And even if you do manage to extract something, the dilated opening is still left behind, meaning it very often refills over time.
